Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka are glacial lakes, long and narrow and carved by ice. Situated almost side by side topographically, the two lakes (once connected) are now separated by a narrow neck of land called an ‘isthmus’. This land is known as The Neck and has exceptional lookout points of each of the lakes.
