This 4 to 6 day tramp around Mount Ruapehu is ideal for those seeking solitude, magnificent mountain views and a real NZ backcountry experience. This is a remote hike that is best undertaken between December and March when the weather is warmer and tracks are clear of snow. The track traverses a diverse landscape of mountain beech forest, tussock-country and alpine herb fields, desert lands and glacial river valleys. Although a greater part of the track is in the alpine environment, there are no major alpine passes. There are six huts on the track, five of which operate on a first-come-first-served basis and the Waihohonu Hut which needs to be booked in advance during the Great Walk season. Shorter sections of the track that take 1-2 days can be walked.
