If you are interested in the history of the New Zealand Land Wars, then the Opepe Reserve is a must visit. There are two loop tracks, one on either side of SH 5, with car park areas on both sides of the road. The northern loop winds its way through majestic native forest with giant rimu and matai trees and there is a side track that to a small historic cemetery from the time of the NZ Land Wars. The southern loop passes through regenerating native bush and through the relics of the old Opepe town and sawmil.
